Reactivating a 40-year-old Black superhero brand for the next generation.

Sun-Man × EightFive Media · 40th Anniversary Campaign

The Client

The first Black action figure produced by a major toy brand.

Yla Eason created Sun-Man in 1985 after her son told her there were no superheroes that looked like him. Forty years later, Sun-Man is being reissued alongside an animated origin film, and Yla brought EightFive Media in to handle the marketing for the anniversary moment.

The Problem

The Sun-Man social channels had been quiet for years.

The 40th anniversary was a once-in-a-generation moment to introduce Sun-Man to a new audience, reconnect with the original collector base, and build pipeline for the reissued toy line and animated film. The brand needed cultural fluency, narrative depth, and a content engine that respected the legacy without freezing it in 1985.

What We Did

Five deliverables. One coherent campaign.

01

Instagram audit and optimization

Bio, highlights, grid, and posting cadence rebuilt around the anniversary narrative.

02

Animated film production tracking

62-shot production spreadsheet aligning marketing rollout with the 4:57 film release.

03

Platform-native caption writing

Every clip got a caption written for the platform, leaning into Sun-Man's mythology.

04

Scroll-stopping video titles

Title overlays designed to stop the scroll and frame the Sun-Man story for new viewers.

05

Client-facing approval tool

A Netlify-based system with video upload, thumbnail extraction, and review interface so Yla could approve assets without email chains.

The Results

Two dormant channels, reactivated.

Discovery

Almost none of it came from people already following.

Share of Facebook views and Instagram reach from people who weren’t already following the account.

Facebook measured by views, Instagram by reach — the basis Meta reports a follower breakdown against on each platform. Percentages are share of that platform’s total, not change over time. Instagram’s two segments are counted separately and overlap slightly, so they total marginally above its reach figure.

The Takeaway

Cultural fluency plus measurable outcomes. That's what EightFive Media does.

Retainer work runs on the same reporting: Growth Foundations for $3M–$15M, Growth Engine for $15M–$50M.
